Analysis of Preliminary Task

I found the preliminary task both challenging and fun - particularly the recording - and I have picked up lots of useful skills that I know will help me in the planning, scripting, recording of my final radio extract.

Whilst writing my task I enjoyed listening to a few different radio stations to get a feel for how they are set out and presented. I listened out for special guests coming onto the show, making notes about why they were there and the kind of things they said when on the show.

I also enjoyed thinking of the name for my radio station and writing the script for the task.

A few things I know to think of for next time include:

  • careful research into audience as this affects the language that presenters use and the type of adverts, guests and topics that will be included in the show
  • choosing actors carefully - to get the right representations for the genre of show and the audience
  • being as creative as possible with my news stories and adverts - as using the software has shown me that I can re-create any location from the studio, using appropriate sound effects and music

I am now much more confident with the recording and editing process, but I will have to do much more research into existing radio stations and, in particular, the ways that news is presented. This is the task I am going to start with.

I feel that in doing the preliminary task I definitely now have a better understanding of what needs to be included in my script, and how to record and edit - it has definitely prepared me for the main task.
